Tongan Language Week – maths

This week for math’s, my group and I structured word problems that has a connection with the Tongan Language Week. There are 7 slides and 10 questions in total to answer, and we make sure the questions are Tongan Language Week related. The following questions followed includes subtracting, addition, division and multiplications. Something I found interesting about this task is how we decided to make up the questions using our knowledge.

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation.

We read the text RISE Up. The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers and created a DLO that explains both sides of perspectives and historical events. Something I found interesting about this text was how we mentioned about past, present and future.

Once a Panther

LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

This week our group read the text Once a Panther and asked to create a comic strip that represents a sce ne thats related  prejudice and justice. For this comic strip, my group suggested an idea that goes to be an older man and another member from the Polynesian Panthers having a conversation between justice and prejudice. Sharing our thinking is very important, and that is how this comic strip ended up this way, alongside the chatting bubbles and the people. Something I found interesting about this challenge was how we could make our own graphic novels, that was fun to do.

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

For our school trip one of the activities we had was about volcanoes, in one of the rooms we went in it had a cool volcano effect. The room had a cool little volcano, and it had different types of volcanic rocks that came out of the volcano once it erupted. Our group had to make wise choices so they could stay safe in the event they were evacuated. We had 30 seconds to decide what to pack if there was a volcanic eruption near us. Something I found interesting was that in the Museum, there was a section in the Musuem called The Halls of Memories, and it was dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in World War I.

Our backpack choices were:

  • backpack
  • toys
  • can of food
  • hole punch
  • torch
  • can opener
  • pan
  • gloves
  • cat
  • muesli bar
  • cat food
  • goggles
  • bottle of water
  • tea towel
  • first aid kit
  • mask

AI Movie

LI: To use our knowledge about dinosaurs in creative ways

We were given 2 create challenges to help us show our learning in creative and fun ways.

Create Challenge 1: Use ADOBE Express to generate an image about each dinosaur on your completed sheet. You can not use their name – only the facts you have gathered.

Create Challenge 2: Use https://hailuoai.video to create AI films showing 3 of your dinosaurs in their natural habitat.

I enjoyed these challenges because I got to learn fun new facts about the parasaurolophus and got to collaborate with my classmates .

Dilophosaurus Research

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

Our challenge was to create a DLO that tells others about the dinosaur we found when we excavated our dinosaur eggs. My partner and I found the skeleton of a Dilophosaurus, what I’d found out is that a Dilophosaurus was one of the largest carnivores of its time. Something I found interesting was that a Dilophosaurus could reach lengths of about 20 feet and weigh around 900 to 1,000 pounds.

Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

For Reading, we read a text called ‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology and we were challenged to create a DLO about a provocation about “Should the Goverment of today (2021) have apologised for the dawn raids of yesterday (970s)? Me and Cattaleya was using our smart searching about the Polynesian Panthers and dawn raids and used our own opinions about why they should apologies and why not. I enjoyed doing this acitivty because we get to learn about what happened in the past and what happened in New Zealand.

Dinosaur Eggs

LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.

Our challenge was to create a Google Draw that shows clearly labelled examples of each fossil type. Me and my patren work together to make this egg, the ingerisedsns we used were salt, water, flower and our dinosaur, Its was really fun doing it because after we made it we put it on our window seal and made sure it was dry. After some weeks, we cracked it open, But first we went outside and put it in some dirt thinking like it was there for ages, we took some photos with it. We came upstairs and we cracked it open we made a mess but it was ok cause it was in a box. After we used Adobe express to generate a old picture using it, we used our ideas to add on our egg. Something I found interesting was that we got to learn about dinosaurs and create it.

Mary Anning

Before we took part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century. Something I learnt was that Mary Anning was the first to complete the skeleton of a Plesiosaurus and an Ichthyosaurus , she was 23 years old when she discovered the Plesiosaurus and 12 years old for Ichthyosaurus.
